First things first, do you really need cleaning tools like Mackeeper?

Keep your Mac safe online. MacKeeper has your back, standing by to detect and squash viruses before they have a chance to ruin your day. Plus, it removes apps designed to bombard your Mac with annoying pop-ups. Don't do anything else in MacKeeper - don't sign up to anything, don't click anything. Just quit the app. Delete extra files with AppCleaner. At this point we recommend that you download. MacKeeper’s features that are not available in CleanMyMac: Track My Mac, ID Theft Guard, Private Connect, and StopAd. Track My Mac, as the name suggests, allows for tracking the Mac in case if it gets lost or stolen. But I am not sure why you would use it, because Apple.

Short answer: Yes, you do. Modern day use requires regular maintenance. And it is best to have a cleaning tool and run it every couple of weeks to remove junk from your Mac.

There has been much talk about Mackeeper on the internet lately. A lot of people criticize it while on the other hand, many actually prefer it as a mac cleaning tool. I figured I'd get a license and try it out myself.

Note: This is a long and in-depth review, here is a quick summary:

  1. Macs do need cleaning tools.
  2. Is mackeeper a scam/virus/malware? NO! The only reason it is criticized is that they advertise like crazy!
  3. The actual product is pretty good overall. I ended up saving a lot of storage space, freeing up some RAM and my Mac runs better overall.
  4. I managed to get the Mackeeper guys to offer a 20% discount for Macsumo readers. You can get the discount by clicking the button below.

And now, the detailed review of Mackeeper.

What is Mackeeper?

Mackeeper is a suite of cleaning and optimization tools for Mac.

Will it slow my Mac?

No. It actually improved my Macbook's performance. I ended up saving some storage space. The three features that I liked the most were Memory Ccleaner, Duplicates Finder, and Smart Uninstaller. Using these three I was able to free up RAM and clean up my hard drive to save space.

Is Mackeeper a scam?

Let's define “scam” first. Here's the Oxford Definition:

A dishonest scheme; a fraud:

Now, Mackeeper is not a fraud. It does exactly what it says on the tin. It's cleaning utility and it does clean junk from your Mac.

I didn't notice any performance issues after installing Mackeeper on my Macbook Air 2013 (Note to self: Time to upgrade the machine).

Hands-on Review:

On to the hands-on review of Mackeeper v3.11.3 on macOS Sierra v10.12:

Download and Installation:

After getting the license key, I downloaded Mackeeper from their download page.

Installation is pretty simple. Open the pkg file and follow the on-screen instructions.

Here is how the main window looks:

There are a bunch of tools to select from the left sidebar. Let's try them one by one.

Memory Cleaner:

My Macbook Air has 4 GB of RAM, and I do give it a run for its money with all the apps I have open simultaneously. I managed to free up almost 25% RAM using the Memory Cleaner tool as can be seen in the screenshots below.

Duplicates Finder:

One of the most useful features of Mackeeper is the Duplicates Finder. If you download a lot of stuff from the internet and move it around a lot, chances are you might have a few duplicate files sitting on your hard drive. It doesn't make much difference if the files are of small size (like in my case) but de-duping can free up some storage if the duplicate files are bigger in size e.g. video files, ISOs, etc.

Smart Uninstaller:

Another useful feature. In case you're not already aware, just deleting the app file does not uninstall that app from your Mac. There are leftover files that need to be removed too. This is where the Smart Uninstaller tool comes in handy.

I didn't uninstall any application from my Mac using it, but it is a pretty simple tool that will remove the leftover files when you choose to uninstall an application through it.

Files Recovery:

This module can recover the files you've removed from your hard drive.

When you press the scan button, it will take a bit of time to perform a full scan. I stopped it after a few minutes, and it told me it could recover a few files. I didn't need the files, though, so I didn't give recovering those files a try.

Its a useful feature if you don't back up your data using Time Machine or Dropbox etc. In case you lose your data, you can recover the files using this tool.

Data Encryptor:

Not all users need to hide data on their hard drive, but for those who do, this tool is pretty handy. Here's how it works:

  1. You set up a password at first use.
  2. You can then ‘log in' to the Data Encryptor tool and view your hidden files and unhide them.

Personally, I'm the only user of my Macbook Air, so I don't need to hide any files. In case you share your Mac with someone else and need to hide personal files, you could use this.

Login Items:

You can use this tool to add/remove programs to your startup. Pretty simple.

Disk Usage:

If you have a lot of files on your Mac, there may be some large files that are no longer needed. This module scans your hard drive and tells you which file/folder is taking how much space so you can decide whether or not you want to keep it there. I suck at file management and keeping things clean so this is a pretty useful feature for me.

Mackeeper

Default Apps:

Again, a pretty simple tool to change the default apps for various file types.

Fast Cleanup:

Fast Cleanup is another useful feature. The tool scans your Mac for junk files and gives you the choice of deleting them right within the Mackeeper interface. I performed a quick scan, and it found 1.2GB of junk files on my hard drive.

As you can see, these files include binaries, cache files, logs, localizations, etc. You can safely delete them to free up some space on your Mac. I recommend running it and cleaning your mac every week.

Shredder:

If you've got some files that you permanently want to delete without leaving the possibility to recover them using some data recovery software, you can use the Mackeeper Shredder to “shred' them. Just select a file, and it will delete/shred it permanently. Comes in handy sometimes.
